Muriel’s Wedding 20th Anniversary

In September 1994, a small Australian film called “Muriel’s Wedding” became both a critical and audience favourite that quickly made its way around the globe. This weekend marks 20 years since we sang along to ABBA with two of Australia’s favourites Toni Collette and Rachel Griffiths alongside Linsten Morris Managements own Kuni Hashimoto. Who suffered through her days in Porpoise Spit, simply because she was born in the wrong decade just wanted to listen to ABBA and plan her fictional wedding. What’s so wrong with that?

Australian writer-director PJ Hogan gave us a movie quite unlike anything American audiences had seen before — and the Weinsteins of Miramax were the ones to make that happen.  I remember having just returning to being an Agent back in 1994 with Barbara Leane. I still recall one of those seminal moments when the renowned casting director Alison Barrett called with news that 2 of our young up and coming clients at the time Sophie Lee and Pippa Grandison landed support lead roles in this film. The champagne was flowing! Australian films like Muriel’s Wedding, Baz Luhrmann’s Strictly Ballroom, and The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert took the States by storm back in the early ’90s thanks to Harvey and Bob Weinstein Americanizing the marketing campaigns simply by making them seem less foreign.

This is one of those movies that you can watch over and over again and discover something new about it. Without being too corny or trying too hard, PJ Hogan has Muriel become the woman she’s always wanted to be. independent, confident, and sure about her future. Happy 20th Anniversary Muriel.
